Social Emotional Learning Standards

The research is significant, and our experience supports it - Social Emotional Teaching and Learning is foundational to a positive school experience for our students. The K-2 Report Cards Revision and the new Grade 3-6 Report Cards now include communication of how each student is growing in their Social Emotional Core Competencies.

We have used the work of CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning to guide the standards on the Report Cards. Teachers have provided feedback about how to describe the behaviors that show a student is meeting the standards. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has also used CASEL to guide the work they are doing to implement Social Emotional Learning Standards in schools across the Commonwealth.

The five competency strands for students are described in a one-page overview. They are:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making

The Social-Emotional Standards on each report card have been organized by the five strands and are slightly different for each grade level, to reflect developmental appropriateness. They are listed here with the Report Card standards on the left and the connection to the CASEL Standards on the right. The formatting on the actual report cards will look a little different.
